James Kemp papers, 1784-1827.

Bishop Kemp's papers concern all aspects of his career and episcopate, a momentous period both for the Episcopal Church and the country. Included are about two hundred letters by Bishop Kemp, plus other writings, notes, charges, sermons, and official papers; the rest of the collection consists of other correspondence or references to him. The papers date from about 1784 until Kemp's death in 1827, together with later materials. Many events of the period are covered, including the problems of his election and consecration, the debate over proposals for a theological seminary in Maryland, relations with the Methodists, political and economic troubles of the times, the War of 1812, slavery, and the Evangelical Episcopal Church. Earlier papers concern Kemp's career on the Eastern Shore, while rector of Great Choptank and Dorchester Parishes, Dorchester County, 1789-1812; and in Baltimore as rector of St. Paul's Parish from 1812.
